Heat and green electricity with support from ALMA

The electricity company in question produces heat and cooling for the Helsinki metropolitan area and electricity for its customers all over Finland. Co-operation with ALMA started in 2016 with single projects and has since expanded significantly.

The energy group in question produces heat, cooling and electricity for its customers. In the near future, the company is largely evolving into a wind and solar power company. By the end of 2025, the company’s new electricity production capacity will amount to 1,300 megawatts and more than 90% of the electricity production will be emission-free.

Co-operation with ALMA started in 2016, when ALMA was introduced as project-specific document management software at a power plant belonging to the group. In 2018, ALMA was commissioned in connection with a heat accumulator project. In 2019, technical documentation management system providers were tendered and Vitec ALMA won the tender competition.

ALMA was especially praised for its excellent data security, flexibility, and ability to manage users in different roles, whether inside or outside the group.

ALMA copes with large numbers of users

After the 2019 EU tendering competition, ALMA was introduced as the entire Group’s document management system. The group uses several distinct ALMA systems, because the functions of the group and its subsidiaries are also different. For example, the electricity grid and thermal power plants require dedicated systems. The most recent locations where the system has been commissioned include a hydroelectric plant and a wind farm.

ALMA has 350 users in the group and 600 users through 80 different co-operation partners. User management is a key feature of the system. The system is being constantly developed in co-operation with Vitec ALMA and new functionalities are introduced as required.

Excellent data security and flexibility

Data security is essential for the group when it comes to IT systems. The system must be able to demonstrate flexibility when circumstances change, but data security must be in order despite the large number of users. The number of documents in the system is immense. By now, hundreds of thousands of documents have been entered into the database in a common format. ALMA’s search services work well and integrations into other software are functional.

Environmental matters are important for the company. Besides the production method, timely device and equipment maintenance and the longest possible service life are important. The energy industry has traditionally been a major source of emissions, but the situation has changed a lot in recent years. Old power plants are being decommissioned and new emission-free energy production is constantly being developed. Equipment life cycle management is a factor usable to reduce emissions and improve production efficiency. The ALMA data system supports the achievement of these objectives.

Along with wind and solar power, energy-efficient heat pumps and electric boilers are on the rise. All kinds of combustion are being phased down and heat production is electrified. A vision for the future relies on miniature nuclear power plants, which are no longer just a wild idea, but possibly the reality in the next few decades.
